The standard design of the toy incorporates a pecking head.

The weight at the end of the string swings in a circular motion causing the string to alternate between loose and taut.

As the string tenses, it applies a torque at the base of the head and causes the head to lift.  The head can only lift until the back of the head impacts on the wooden slot.

When the string loosens, the weight of the wooden head causes it to fall.  The beak strikes the wooden platform creating a sharp rapping sound.
